Meditation is like a gym in which you develop the powerful mental muscles of calm and insight.
— Ajahn Brahm
Meditation was the common thread between the hundreds of books and blog articles I read on improving one's self.
After putting it off for too long I finally took up the practice and learned for myself the power of meditation.
To get started with meditation, I'm going to walk through the few steps I used.
- Sit in a comfortable chair in a room where you will not be disturbed for the duration of the practice.
- Close your eyes. While there are types of meditation where you can open your eyes, it's recommended for beginners to close them.
- Take a few deep breaths to begin the practice.
- Breathe normally and focus on each breath coming in and out at the base of your lips or nose.
- You need to let go. If you try too hard it can cause anxiety. As thoughts come up, gently acknowledge them, then return your focus to your breath.
